Həyatın o tayını maraqlandıran tibb tələbələri, ölüm və həyat arasındakı sərhədi nəzarətdə saxlayaraq, o dünyaya qısa müddətli səyahətlər etməyə qərar verirlər. Bədən funksiyalarını dayandıraraq ölümü görmək imkanı qazanan gənclər, bu təcrübənin qaranlıq tərəfləri ilə də üzləşməli olacaqlar. Rejissorluğunu Joel Schumacher-in etdiyi film artıq bir kult əsər hesab olunur. Rejissora xas bəzi mühafizəkar və mübahisəli mesajlar ehtiva etsə də, olduqca orijinal bir filmdir.
