Candy, xeyriyyəçisi "Baba" William Albert Ardley-nin, Annie Pony's Home-dan övladlığa götürüləndə yaşadığı əzabdan bəri bütün bu müddət ərzində göz önündə gizləndiyini öyrənəndə şoka düşür. Valideynləri öldükdən və xalası Elroy onun qəyyumu olduqdan sonra Albert Ardley ailəsinin başçısı rolunu yerinə yetirmək üçün çox gənc idi, buna görə də o, müdrikcəsinə "Düşmənlərini aldatmaq üçün müttəfiqlərini aldat" prinsipini tətbiq etdi. Keçmişi xatırlayarkən aydın olur ki, Albert həm Candy-dən, həm də bütün Ardley ailəsindən gizli qalaraq, bacardığı qədər Candy-yə yol göstərən bir ata olmağa çalışıb. Alistear, Archibald və Anthony, Candy-nin Ardley ailəsində bir insan kimi yoxsa bir kənarlaşdırılmış kimi rəftar ediləcəyini xalasının ixtiyarına buraxaraq bütün yumurtaları bir səbətə qoymaq istəmədikləri üçün, o, Candy-ni qızı kimi övladlığa götürüb. Və Candy-nin gözləri ona mərhum böyük bacısını, Anthony-nin anasını xatırladırdı.
