İki polis məmurunu öldürdüyünə görə 15 il həbs cəzası alan Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock) azadlığa çıxdıqdan sonra yeni bir həyat qurmağa çalışır. Lakin həbsxanadan çıxan kimi, öldürdüyü polislərin yaxınları onu təhdid edərək həyatını cəhənnəmə çevirməyə başlayırlar. Keçmişi onu rahat buraxmır və cəmiyyət tərəfindən qəbul olunmur. Çıxılmaz vəziyyətdə qalan və nifrət dolu hücumlara məruz qalan Ruth üçün yeganə bir yol qalır: illər əvvəl itirdiyi kiçik bacısını tapmaq. Lakin uzun illər həbsdə qaldıqdan sonra ailə üzvünü tapmaq gözlədiyindən daha çətin olur.
