Ceyms Stivens (Entoni Hopkins) İkinci Dünya Müharibəsi ərəfəsində İngiltərənin çətin dövründə Darlington malikanəsinin baş uşağıdır və qaydalara həddindən artıq bağlılığı ilə tanınır. İşçilərə qarşı dəmir intizam tətbiq edən bu adam bütün həyatını lorduna (Ceyms Foks) xidmət etməyə həsr edib. Bu vəziyyət aşpaz Miss Kentonun (Emma Tompson) malikanəyə gəlişi ilə dəyişməyə başlayır. Kenton mərhəmətli və incə ruhlu bir qadındır. Xidmətdən başqa heç nə görməyən Stivens, Miss Kentona qarşı isti hisslər bəsləsə də, bunu etiraf edə bilməyəcək qədər qürurludur.
