Deli ve Dahi, Oxford İngilis dili lüğətinin yaradılmasının real hekayəsindən bəhs edir. Professor James Murray qarşısına qoyduğu məqsədə çatmaq üçün gecə-gündüz çalışır. Onun əsas məqsədi Oxford İngilis dili lüğətinin on min sözdən ibarət ilk nəşrini hazırlamaqdır. İşləri davam etdiyi müddətdə Murray-in əlinə psixiatriya xəstəxanasından böyük bir tədqiqat işi keçir. Çox təhlükəli xəstələrin saxlandığı bir ruhi xəstəxanada yatan Dr. W.C. Minor, professora 10.000 sözdən ibarət bir siyahı göndərir. Minorun göndərdiyi bu siyahı ikilinin yollarının kəsişməsinə səbəb olur.
