XIX əsr sonlarında Londonda Robert Angier, sevgili həyat yoldaşı Julia McCullough və Alfred Borden həm dostlar, həm də bir sehrbazın assistentləridirlər. Bir tamaşa zamanı Julia ölən zaman Robert, onun ölümünə görə Alfredi günahlandırır və onlar düşmən olurlar. Zamanla hər ikisi də məşhur olur və bir-birləri ilə rəqib sehrbazlara çevrilərək səhnə üzərində bir-birinin performansını pozğun etməyə çalışırlar. Alfred uğurlu bir hiylə həyata keçirən zaman Robert, rəqibinin sirini açmaq üçün məntiqli bir şəkildə fiks olaraq düşünür və fəlakətli hadisələr bir-birini təqib edir.
