Döyüşməyə elə də həvəsli olmayan qəhrəman Benjamin Martin, ingilislər onun dəyər verdiyi insanları təhdid etməyə başlayanda özünü Amerika İnqilabının ortasında tapır. İdealist bir vətənpərvər olan oğlu Qabriellə birlikdə silaha sarılıb Amerika milislərinin başına keçir və "qırmızı mundirlilərlə" üz-üzə döyüşür. Bu hadisələr cərəyan edərkən o, ailəsini qorumağın yeganə yolunun gənc Amerika xalqını tam müstəqilliyə qovuşdurmaq olduğunu anlayır, lakin qaranlıq keçmişi müharibədə də onu rahat buraxmır.
