1870-ci illərin Yaponiyasında Amerika ordusunun kapitanı Natan Olqren, Yaponiya İmperatorunun dəvəti ilə ölkənin ilk ordusunu təlim keçmək üçün şərqə gəlir. Modernləşməyə meylli olan feodal mədəniyyət, eyni zamanda samuray ənənələrini də qoruyub saxlayır. Bir qəza nəticəsində samurayların lideri tərəfindən xilas edilən Olqren, köklü samuray mədəniyyəti ilə tanış olur və ondan təsirlənir. Bir samuray döyüşçüsü kimi hərəkət etməyi öyrəndikdə, böyük bir qərarın astanasına gəlir. O, iki tərəf arasında qalır və vicdanının ona doğru yolu göstərməsini gözləyir.
