Keşiş Cotton Marcus-un gündəlik işləri arasında "şeytan çıxarmaq", "pis ruhları qovmaq", "cin və pərilərlə mübarizə aparmaq" var. Luizianada Sweetzer-in fermasına çatanda o, həmişə etdiyi şeytan çıxarma ayinlərindən birini həyata keçirəcəyini düşünür. Marcus öz icması üçün ayini lentə almağa qərar verir. Sweetzer-in qızı Nell-in ruhu pis bir iblisin əlinə keçib. Gənc qız qaranlıq qüvvələrin əsirinə çevrilib. Marcus ayinə başlayanda indiyədək qarşılaşmadığı bir şər ilə üz-üzə qaldığını anlayır. Lakin artıq geri çəkilmək üçün çox gecdir.
