Atasının ölümündən sonra Daniel anası ilə birlikdə Nyuarkdan Nyu-Cersiyə köçür. Yeni yaşadıqları yerdə o, nəzakətli okinavalı cənab Miagi ilə tanış olur. Məktəbdən yeni dostu Ali Mills ilə çimərlikdə gəzərkən, qızın keçmiş sevgilisi və "Kobra" karate məktəbinin ən yaxşı tələbəsi olan Conni ilə başı dərdi düşür. Bu münaqişə nəticəsində Daniel Conni və onun dostları tərəfindən döyülərkən cənab Miagi onu xilas edir. Miagi əvvəlcə Danielin onun müəllimi (sensei) olmaq təklifini rədd etsə də, Conni və dostlarının qisas almaq istəyini gördükdən sonra onun müəllimi olmağa razılıq verir.
