İl 1917, müharibə dünyanı bürüyüb. Kentukkinin ucqar bir kəndindən gələn istedadlı müğənni Layonel ilə xarizmatik bəstəkarlıq tələbəsi Devid konservatoriyada tanış olurlar. 1920-ci ildə Layonel və Devid xalq mahnılarını gələcək nəsillərə çatdırmaq üçün toplamaq məqsədilə çox vaxt keçirirlər; Oliver Hermanusun əksər filmlərində olduğu kimi, onların arasında da deyilməmiş çox şey qalır. İllər keçir, zaman onları ayırsa da, aralarındakı bağ heç vaxt qırılmır.
