Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) yüksək texnologiyalı elektron avadanlıqlardan istifadə edərək dinləmə və izləmə sahəsində ixtisaslaşmış özəl detektivdir. O, özəl detektiv bürosunda müştərilərinin sifarişi ilə hədəf şəxsləri izləyir və onların danışıqlarını lentə alır. Paranoyak və qapalı xarakterə malik Caul-a müraciət edən bir iş adamı ondan gənc bir kişi və qadını izləməsini istəyir. Gənc cütlüyü izləyərkən lentə aldığı söhbətlərdən təsirlənən Caul, artıq bu işə sadəcə bir "tapşırıq" kimi baxa bilmir.
