Normandiya şövalyəsi Jean de Carrouges və Norman beyləri Jacques le Gris əvvəllər çox yaxın dostlar idilər. Carrouges müharibəyə gedəndə və qayıtdıqda hər şey dəyişib. Le Gris, Carrouges'in arvadına təcavüz etdiyinə görə məhkəməyə tutulur. Ancaq heç kim Margerite'ə inanmır. Bunun üzərinə əsgər Fransa qralına müraciət edib qərarı etiraz edir. Hakim Le Gris'in tərəfində davranır. Məhkəmə yeni qərarına görə iki adam düelloya çıxacaq və bu döyüşdən biri öləcəkdir. Sağ qalan şəxs Tanrı'nın iradəsinə uyğun hərəkət edəcəkdir və əgər Le Gris sağ qalarsa, bəraət olunacaqdır. Əlavə olaraq, əgər Carrouges məğlub olarsa, onun arvadı cəza olaraq dirəkdə bağlanıb yandırılacaqdır.
