Avstriyalı Henrix Harrer İkinci Dünya müharibəsi illərində vətənindən uzaqlaşaraq Himalay dağlarına yollanır. Tibetin qadağan olunmuş Lhasa şəhərinə çatan Harrerin ağlı hələ heç görmədiyi övladındadır. Tibetə sığınan Harrer burada uşaq yaşlı ruhani lider Dalay Lamanın himayəsinə keçir və Tibet xalqının Çin tərəfindən məruz qaldığı zülmün şahidi olur. Dalay Lama isə xalqının ləyaqətini qorumaq üçün Harrerin də köməyi ilə daim özünü maarifləndirməyə və inkişaf etdirməyə çalışır.
