Məşhur triller yazarı Mort Rainey yeni kitabı üzərində işləmək üçün göl kənarındakı kimsəsiz evinə çəkilir. Həyat yoldaşından yeni ayrılan Mort fikrini cəmləyib işləyə bilmir. Bir gün John Shooter adlı qəribə bir adam onu ziyarətə gəlir. Adamın iddiasına görə, Mort onun bir qısa hekayəsini oğurlayaraq öz imzası ilə nəşr etdirib. Shooter-in xəbərdarlıqları qısa müddətdə hədə-qorxuya çevriləndə, Mort bir xüsusi detektivdən kömək istəyir. Bütün cəhdlərə baxmayaraq, Shooter-in dayandırılmaması hadisələrin nəzarətdən çıxmasına səbəb olacaq.
