1938-ci ildə avstriyalı, varlı bir notarius olan Josef Bartok gizlətdiyi mühüm məlumatlara görə nasistlər tərəfindən həbs edilir. Bir otel otağına qapadılan Josef, psixi sağlamlığını itirmək üzrə ikən təsadüfən tapdığı şahmat kitabı sayəsində həyata tutunur. Kitabı sətir-sətir, başdan-ayağa əzbərləyən Josef, daha əvvəl heç oynamadığı bu oyunda ustalaşır. Nəhayət, azadlığına qovuşduqda isə tale onu New York-a gedən gəmidəki şahmat turnirində dünya şahmat çempionu ilə qarşı-qarşıya gətirir.
