Yazarlıq yolunda irəliləyən Nick Carraway 1920-ci illərdə əyləncə həyatının mərkəzinə çevrilmiş New York-a gəlir. Öz Amerikan xəyalının ardınca gediş yolunda təsadüfən milyarder Jay Gatsby və onun çevrəsi ilə yolları kəsişir. Carraway tezliklə alkoholin su kimi axdığı, göz qamaştıran şənliklərə tanış olur. Ancaq bu sehrli Amerikan xəyalının çöküşü də yaxınlaşır. Xaricdən möhtəşəm görünən bu həyatın gizlətməyə çalışdığı həqiqətlər ortaya çıxacaqdır.
