Yeni evlənən Justine (Kirsten Dunst) və Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) öz toy mərasimlərini Justine-in bacısı Claire-in (Charlotte Gainsbourg) malikanəsində təmtəraqlı bir şəkildə qeyd edirlər. Lakin bu iki bacı xaraktercə bir-birinin tam ziddidir. Justine depressiyaya və melanxoliyaya meyilli bir qadın olduğu halda, Claire bacısına nisbətən daha sakit və problemlərdən uzaqdır. Toy günü ailənin bütün üzvlərinin gizli problemləri bir-bir üzə çıxmağa başlayır. Məhz bu şənlik zamanı Melancholia adlı bir planet, indiyədək Günəşin arxasında gizləndiyi orbitdən çıxaraq Yer kürəsinə doğru yaxınlaşır. Artıq hər kəsin özünəməxsus qiyaməti başlayır.
