Detektiv və məhkəmə psixoloqu Dr. Alex Cross bacısı qızının müəmmalı şəkildə yoxa çıxmasından sonra istintaqı öz üzərinə götürür. Yerli hüquq-mühafizə orqanlarının etirazlarına baxmayaraq, öz üsulları ilə araşdırmaya başlayan Cross, bunun tək qurban olmadığını və eyni dəst-xəttlə törədilmiş 7 yoxa çıxma hadisəsinin olduğunu aşkar edir. Bu təqibdə ona cinayətkarla üz-üzə gəlmiş gənc həkim Kate McTiernan kömək edir. İtkin düşən qızı tapmaq və hadisənin arxasındakı həqiqəti üzə çıxarmaq üçün zamana qarşı yarış başlayır.
