Gənc və idealist həkim Dr. Guy Luthan (Hugh Grant) Nyu-Yorkda təcili yardım şöbəsində çalışır. Bir gecə, qəribə simptomlarla gətirilən xəstə qəfil vəfat edir. Meyit yarılması zamanı xəstənin beyninin və onurğa beyninin yerində olmadığını görən Guy, bu işin üstünə düşməyə qərar verir. Lakin araşdırmaları dərinləşdikcə, məşhur nevroloq Dr. Lawrence Myrick-in (Gene Hackman) rəhbərlik etdiyi bir qrup həkimin evsizlər və itkin düşmüş şəxslər üzərində qeyri-qanuni tibbi təcrübələr apardığını kəşf edir. Myrick-in komandası onurğa beyni zədələnmələrini müalicə etmək üçün qeyri-etik üsullardan istifadə edir.
