1820-ci ilin qış ayları. Yeni İngiltərənin "Essex" balina ovlayan gəmisi heç kimin inana bilməyəcəyi bir varlıq tərəfindən hücuma məruz qalır. Gəmiyə hücum edən, sanki qisas hissi ilə dolu, iradə sahibi nəhəng bir balinadır. "Dənizin Ortasında" filmi bu hadisədən sonra gəmidə baş verənləri və heyətin sağ qalmaq üçün əl atdığı ağlasığmaz üsulları əks etdirən bir hekayədir.
